                                                                               TIAMAT

Tiamat, of Babylonian Epic of Creation (1st millennium BCE), is an ancient sea goddess who gave birth to all.  Part glistening cosmic serpent, part winged animal, her image may superficially more dragon than demon.  It is sais that within her holds the DNA of all demon species.

"When skies above were not yet named
Nor earth below pronounced by name
                                                   there was water..."

and Tiamat mingled her salt seas with fresh waters of Apsu, her consort, and bore populations of gods who lived within her darkness until finally Apsu could no longer bear them.  Apsu tried to destroy all the young, thus enrageing Tiamat.  Along with her son, Tiamat destroyed Apsu and she reigned for mant generations without challenge until Marduk wanted her dominion.

Marduk had 4 ears, 4 eyes and breathed fire.  In prepareing to challenge Tiamat, he made a bow and arrow and a huge net.  He had with him a herb to work against Tiamat's poisons, spells, and a mace.  He rode upon a storm chariot and had the 7 winds to follow him to battle.

Tiamat full of rage and from it sprang monsters, demons, and evil creatures full of venom.  Her army was terrible and appointed Kingu to be her husband and lead them into battle.  Marduk challenged Tiamat to single battle.  He caught her in his net and sent the evil winds to her that forced her mouth to remain open, which distended her belly.  Marduk entered her and saw an entire demon army within her.  He shot an arrow into her heart spliting it in two killing her.  Marduk then smashed her skull with the mace, sliced her in two.  He created the sky with one half and the erath with the other half.  From her eyes sprang forth two rivers, from her udder came mountains, from her saliva rain and clouds, from her poisons came fog.  After he had named this and placed the gods and stars in the sky, he created man from the blood of Kingu.

This tale was read every year at the Babylonian new year festival.

                                                                           KELPIE

The Kelpie, also known as Each-uisg, is a male creature found in and near all moving water in Scotland, most notably, Loch Ness.  On the west coast of Scotland the Kelpie is said to be a young handsome horse, black or brown in color,  It lures people, mostly children, upon its back which is like glue, and runs into the sea where he devours them.  On the east coast it is said to be a yellow horse.

One tale of the Kelpie from the west coast has the Kelpie shape shifting into a handsome young man who courted young maidens.  One night he fell asleep by the side of his latest maiden, when she found a bit of sea weed in his hair and saw something strange in his appearance.  She ran from him, he followed her vowing to drag her back.  After a time the maiden forgot him and met her true love.  On their wedding day, just as the bride was on her way out of the church, she was seized by a large black horse and was taken into the sea.
Some say her face bobs up from time to time in the pale light of the moon.

A Kelpie can be caught only by trapping it with a bridle adorned with a cross.  It can be used for hard labor and is tireless.  At the end of the day, it must be given a human victim.  Another tale of the Kelpie tells of men working a field when they see a Kelpie rising from the water, just as a rider appeared on horseback speeding towards the water.  The workers caught hold of the rider, dragged him into the church where they locked him in.
They were determined to save the man from a watery death and only would release him after the hour had passed.  When they went to set him free, he was drowned in a pail of water.

When ever near loch country remember: Kelpies are unflaggingly persistent and cannot be stopped with normal methods.there is only one true way to stop a Kelpies evil ways, they can not abide still unmoving waters, such as a puddle, rain or tap water, or bottled water.  Carry with you a bottle of puddle water to keep the Kelpie at bay.

                                                                      RUSALKA

The Rusalka is a charming amphibious creature living in the lakes and rivers of Russia.  It can be seen when the moonlight shines on her green hair.  She has pale skin and is very beautiful.  She is a temptress as are many of her water cousins such as mermaids.  She can shape shift into a fish, a toad, or a frog.

The original Rusalka ia a Russian underawater princess who lives in the deepest part of the river or lake.  She longs for mortal playmates.  She lures children on land with goodies and candy and young men with her charms.  She is doomed to be lonely for eternity.  Her playmates always drown or are killed by her tickling them to death.  SHe never learns and always drags new victims to their deaths in her longing for friendship.

She is able to live on land for long spans of time, sometimes years.  This is because she keeps a magic comb with her at all times.  She uses the comb to conjure up water whenever she needs it.

Rusalka are thought to be the souls of unbaptized babies or drowned virgins.  In the spring they leave the water and head for the field and woods to dance with garlands in their hair.  They are very dangerous during the Rusal'naia week festival in mid June.  In this festival there is an old rite amoung peasants in southern Russia and the Ukraine of making an effigy of the Rusalka which is burnt or tore to pieces.  They make offerings to it of eggs and garlnads and songs are sung to avert their powers.

One June a man meet a Rusalka in the woods and feel in love with the creature.  She was out of breath and beuatiful with flowers in her hair.  They lived together happily until summer ended and she had to return to her spring.  He begged her not to go back but she could no longer remain.  The man wandered the woods lonely for her, to the point of making himself sick with grief.  He finally gave in  and jumped head first into the spring going down to his wife.  He found her and they embrassed and she wouldn't release him until he made the sigh of the cross and found himself back in his village a sad but smarter man.
